Ride the Dragon!

As said before, I tried out the Unreal-Engine and was quite astomished what you can make with it. For the time beeing I decided to change tools and restart the making of Aklandas Fantasy Simulator with UE4. This may at first seem like a drawback, but the gains are simply overhelming. If it would just be for graphics I would not change so easily, but I also get a massive boost in performance, which was my main issue with the simulator as its older version.

As some of you have asked for a download of the new Simulator I quickly put together a really rough Pre-ALPHA and included some EULA and Limitation of Liability.
This version does NOT include map-making (so I wouldn´t call it a real simulator), but just shows the enhanced map and the better performance - and of course you will be able to mount a dragon!

But be warned: The steering of the dragon is far from perfect, the physics is a mess, the landing often doesn´t work and regardless of all these bugs the download-file is about 1.8GB and the download is slow and ...
I think you got the picture!

For those of you who want be stoped by all this and those who want to ride the dragon NOW, here it is! Just download, let your antivirus run on the downloaded file, unzipp and click on the "AFS001.exe" file:

Post a comment if you like it!

Drive your Dragon with keys W-A-S.
When in Air flap with "W" and steer with rightClick+mouse.
Escape software with key ESC.

Beware: Also the steering is alpha!
In particular:
1. Crushing will probably make a new start impossible.
2. Horizontal speed will decrease if you don´t flap and if you stear to high. You might even move backwards.
3. Lots of other, mentionable and not mentionable bugs!!

Experiments with the Unreal Engine

Its been a long time since...

... I made the last updates. This was mainly to real-life occupation and for me beeing unsatisfied about the acchieved results. Fortunatly I used the time to experiment a bit with other tools and came across some Game Engines. Decided to give the Unreal Engine a chanche and was quite astonished what is possible. Imported some of the 3D graphics I already made and the map from Britain and Ireland and combined them with new content from the Unreal Engine. Have a look at the video on what I got!

Changed strategic map to 3D

Unfortunatly the 2D strategic map became to slow in regard of scrolling and refreshing the terrain. So I had to change to a 3D map and once again fight with openGL. Especially displaying the names of the settlements was a pain in the...
Also had to sort some of the code, methods, classes and whatever else. Took me some days and some hadaches.
Anyway, all went well, and on the right there is the first flyover over the newly generated 3D map of Ireland and Britain. I am not happy with all of the 3D models yet, but I will probably first concentrate on the long-awaitet economics of the simulator.

Starting with the economics

It is time to begin to implement some economics in the simulator. Thus I added some old Roman mines to Britain 800AD.

As dominions where implemented some weeks ago it became time that I also implemented the visualization of the frontiers. They are auto-created, when the dominions are set.

Hex the world

Ok, this map is huge! I tested the map-making-functions of the simulator on the earth. It took some polishing afterwards to make it nicer and smoother, but at least here it is: A 72-miles hex of the world. Feel free to use it in your campaigns.
By the way: Please keep in mind, that this map is based on a mercator-projection. This means angles are perfect (so you can "navigate" by it), but areas aren´t comparable. See the special page for "why this map must be wrong!"

"Hexing" Europe

Scanned in central Europe and asked the simulator to make a hex-map out of it. The map is not elaborated yet, but Iwill need this later on when I will expand the map to the Franconian Empire. But right now it´s just a test for the simulator and it was fun!
